Minutes of the O.P.E.N. Monthly Board Meeting
4 August 2010
Meeting called to order at Newton Public Library by President Jane Ann Cotton. Board
present: David Pitz, Larry Hesson, Maxine Udelhoven, Marvin Campbell, Grant Worthington,
Tom Hoover, John McNeer, Barry Hurto, Joan Tyler, Warren Erickson, Tom Mott.
Rose Trapp Fritz Kramer, Vlad Bassis, and Irina Bassis, notified the president they could not
attend.
Minutes of the 14 July 2010 monthly meeting approved as distributed electronically.
Treasurer’s Report filed for audit. Campbell updated the budget for the sculpture project.
Student Update. The student from Wu Chi Town received her visa for the United States,
and is seeking air fare at a good rate. The host family, whose children have gone off for
college, eagerly anticipate her arrival. A welcome potluck will be scheduled later when
arrival data are known.
Sculpture Project. Cotton obtained a suitable thank you gift for Lyudmila Melnyk, to
recognize her contributions. The sculpture by Vladislav Dymion will be dedicated at the
Jasper County Museum15 August 2010. Campbell has collaborated with the historical
society for the program, ceremonial program, and credits. He suggests bringing cut flowers
to mirror the Ukrainian tradition for such events.
Culture Class. Tyler reports on meetings with Sheri Doane and Eunice Folkerts. Eunice
has notes from a previous similar effort. The culture class may entail up to five sessions,
mostly in October 2010, including two in Pella. Tyler, Erickson, and Cotton meet with
Doane today in Pella.
New Business.
1. Cotton reported on the Johnsons' return from Ukraine.
2. The Open World Program for Ukraine and Russia offers an outline of themes and
dates over the coming year. Pitz moves, Campbell seconds, that O.P.E.N. submit
a letter of intent for participation in a Ukraine program with an education theme in
October 2011. O.P.E.N. would defer to World Services of La Crosse to pick the
delegates. Motion carried.
3. Campbell plans to propose an art project with Viktor Klymenko, a renowned
Ukrainian artist, and his daughter, an iconist and restorer. It will be discussed in
more detail at the next meeting.
