Vladimir and Irina Bassis visit Newton for the first time. This couple eventually becomes teachers of the Russian language and Ukrainian culture in the Newton School system, as well as board members of OPEN.

Dr. Chou-seng Tou, Director General of the Coordination Council for North American Affairs, Taiwan, visits Newton from his office in Chicago.
